Newsletter for the Kinsale Foundation Inc. & Kinsale Museum

August 12, 2011

Everyone is invited to Kinsale Day on Sept. 17.  There will be MANY NEW EVENTS around town that day.

Westmoreland Masonic Lodge #212 will be hosting an open house at the Lodge on Great House Lane from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m., starting with a pancake breakfast from 8-10 at a charge of  $5 per person.  ALL ARE WELCOME!!!  Yummmy!

On the Park and the Green from before 10 a.m. you’ll find great vendors, with high-quality, beautiful and useful art, crafts and other items.  Enjoy antique engines, boats and vintage vehicles.  AND some VERY helpful buyers are coming to town, as well.

A Gold Refinery representative will set up in the cool and comfortable old Ice Cream Parlor. This highly reputable nationwide firm will pay top dollar for scrap gold, including damaged jewelry, single earrings, and those with missing stones. They purchase solid gold only, NOT costume jewelry or plated gold. Prices are based on the karat and weight of the gold -- paid out only on the gram and not by the pennyweight. Most stones in jewelry are glass; however, Gold Refinery representatives are equipped to remove stones and give them back to take home.  The Museum will receive a donation from the company.

Catch up on hometown news at the 11 a.m. annual Foundation meeting, where you will hear Robert Hundley on Civil War topics.  There will be a great opportunity to see friends and relatives and enjoy lively music by Scuffletown during and after lunch.

Those who adopt Rubber Duckies at $5 apiece will also have the chance to win BIG CASH prizes during the staggeringly exciting afternoon Duckie Derby.  Grand prize is $500 cash!!!  Every duck has 5 chances to win!!!  This mailing includes your Rubber Duckie Derby form.  We encourage you to adopt early and often.  Actually, we’re BEGGING you for advance duck sales.

AHOY: ARTISTS and CRAFTERS and other knowledgeable, talented folks (like aquaculturists, boatbuilders, beekeepers, silhouette cutters, etc.)  It is NOT TOO LATE to call Betty Bailey at 472-2353 and let her know you’d like to come.  We’re DYING to have you!!!  There is no fee for exhibitors this year, just a request that you donate one or more items for a silent auction or raffle to help our fund-raising efforts.  Come from 8:30 a.m. on to set up where Betty tells you to on the Green or in the Park.

O.J. Hickox has been working for quite some time to edit Reminiscences of Kinsale, Virginia during the First Half of the 20th Century, as Recorded by Two Sons of the Village, W. Norris Parks and J. Harvey Bailey.  He is hoping to have the limited first edition (100 copies at $35) of this carefully indexed and well-illustrated volume on hand for Kinsale Day for your purchase.  Many thanks to Harvey and Margaret’s daughter Robbie Flynn for her backing in this endeavor, and to O.J. for his extraordinary efforts.  Deep appreciation to all the others who have worked on this over the years, including Edna Douglas, Starr Morrow and John Beale.  E-mail Museum Director Lynn Norris at museumdirector@gmail.com or call 450-7651 to reserve your copy.

We welcome old friends and new to the Museum to share our focus on history brought to life here in the present day.  Thank you so much for your generosity and enthusiasm. we look forward to seeing you at our annual celebrations, held in conjunction with Cople District VFD.  Mark your calendar for Christmas in Kinsale (always the first Saturday in December: Dec.3 in 2011).

Members and friends, you have given with such love over the years, despite the ongoing economic challenges that surround us all.  We could not be here without the support you have demonstrated ever since the Kinsale Foundation was launched 34 years ago, back in 1977. We humbly hope you’ll keep giving generously to make it possible to continue our work in our historic village.

The new roof on the Museum was urgently needed, and Doug Nash at Twin Rivers Roofing gave us a great price. However, the roof’s cost of $12,000 was a substantial outlay for which your help is vital!  Do you have a few extra dollars to spare to contribute to that over and above your dues?  Or, may we tempt you to adopt twice as many rubber duckies as usual?

We love it when you bring your family and company to visit with us in the Park by the Gazebo, at the Museum and in the old Ice Cream Parlor.  The Museum is YOUR Museum, and we value your insights, as well as the way you share your treasures with others.  We promise to entertain and welcome you.  Visit the gift shop in the Museum– you'll find items that are just perfect as hostess gifts or to brighten your own home. There are many books focusing on history and on life on the river.

Please help continue upgrades at the Old Ice Cream Parlor, which got a new heat pump in September 2009.  Didn’t it look pretty all gussied up for Christmas?  We look forward to many pleasant events after the refurbishment of this space as a gallery and library. If you want to give to this, you can add a note on your dues form.

WHAT’S NEW AROUND HERE?   Don’t forget to visit Bill and Barb Whitt’s consignment shop, Up the Creek, in the old Moss Chevrolet dealership in the middle of Kinsale, where they have lived for several years. It is open Monday-Saturday, 10-6, (472-4350).  And Sharon and James Beninghove continue to welcome you on Saturdays to their Gray Barn Antiques shop in the old Crowther Ford Dealership on Kinsale’s Bank Street.  Both are a great help to the Museum and the community in general.  Brand spanking new is The Health Nut, (thehealthnutllc@aol.com, 529-5888) operated by Barbara and Frank Sherman, who live at Murphy’s Mill Point, Kinsale. They have natural and organic groceries, at the Callao stoplight in the former movie rental store.

ANOTHER COMING ATTRACTION: Like the Kinsale Foundation, Cople District VFD is urgently trying to raise funds to serve you.  We promised Chief Tommy Lewis to mention they are hosting an all-you-can-eat crab feast and big lottery on Sat., Sept. 24, 4-7 pm. at Kinsale firehouse, 30/person.  Reach Tommy on his cell (450-0161) or see a fireman. Also, the fire siren is active again in the new cupola on the firehouse during daylight hours so you’ll know how many times they go out to serve you.  It will also blow a l-o-o-o-n-g-e-r blast for a hazardous weather alert, day or night.
